Athlete Spotlight

Meet Michael Bullock

Michael Bullock

What team do you participate on?
I have participated on the Rhody Rangers team for two years. Prior to this, I was on the East Providence Townies team, beginning in 1996 up until joining the Rhody Rangers.

What sports do you compete in?
I compete in Basketball and Track & Field. The track events I compete in are the 100-meter run, the 200-meter run, and the 4 x 100 meter relay. My favorite sport among those I compete in is basketball because it takes teamwork to play well and I enjoy playing with my teammates.

Where did you go to school?
I attended East Providence High School and graduated in 2003.

Do you have a job? If so, tell us about it.
Yes I do. I work at Stop & Shop on Pawtucket Avenue in East Providence as a porter. I’ve worked there for 23 years this July. My favorite part of the job is keeping the store clean for people so they enjoy their shopping experience. I also enjoy interacting and helping customers so they’ll want to keep coming back to shop there.

Why did you choose to participate in Athlete Leadership University (ALU)?
I wanted to learn more about what it takes to be an athlete leader. Since participating in ALU, I have learned what it takes to be an athlete leader for my team and how to spread the word about Special Olympics.

What do you hope to accomplish as a result of your involvement with this program?
Through the skills I’ve picked up through ALU, I am confident I now have the tools to lead athlete meetings and serve on a committee. I also understand the importance of good communications. My capstone project focuses on an athlete newsletter with the goal of having more athletes and their family members know what’s going on with the team and with Special Olympics Rhode Island. A lot of athletes don’t have social media and this newsletter will help give them access to the information they need.

What do you enjoy doing for fun?
I enjoy spending time with my girlfriend, Mary-Ellen, on date nights and cooking together. I also enjoy hanging out with friends at sporting events and restaurants. One of my favorite things to do during down time is exercise whether it’s going for a walk or going to the gym.

Is there anything else about yourself that you would like to share?
I am proud to be one of two athlete representatives on Special Olympics Rhode Island’s Board of Directors, which I have served on since 2020. It gives me an opportunity to be a voice for my fellow athletes. I am also honored to be a member of the organization’s Athlete Leadership Council.

I am a huge sports fan of all the New England Teams! My favorite team is the Patriots and I’ve been fortunate to attend some of their games. I am also a big fan of pro wrestling especially World Wrestling Entertainment, commonly known as WWE. I have been to WWE wrestling events when they come to Providence. My favorite Wrestlers are John Cena and the Undertaker!
