Athlete Spotlight

Meet Rachel Gederman!

Rachel Gederman

What team do you participate on?
I’ve participated on the Cranston Cyclones team since 2021.

What sports do you compete in?
Basketball, softball, bowling, volleyball, and track & field. Of these sports, basketball is my favorite because I feel like it’s a sport where everyone gets to participate more.

Where did you go to school?
I graduated from Cranston West High School – Class of 2024. I am currently attending the Cranston Transition Program. This is a program that teaches life skills, including how to prepare for a job.

Do you have a job? If so, tell us about it.
I don’t have a job at this time, but once I’ve completed the Cranston Transition Program, I would love to work at a Starbucks as a barista.

Why did you choose to participate in the Athlete Leadership University (ALU)?
I wanted to learn more about Special Olympics and to give back too. A lot of people have helped me over the years, and I want to pay that forward by helping others.

What have you accomplished through your involvement with ALU?
I learned how to be a better public speaker and also started a VLOG called ‘Cyclone Chat’ to help recruit volunteers and athletes for Special Olympics Rhode Island. If you’d like to check it out, just click the following link: Cyclone Chat Vlog

What do you enjoy doing for fun?
I enjoy making Gacha Club videos, helping out at my church as an altar server, and collecting Furbies and Hatchimals.

Is there anything else about yourself that you would like to share?
Special Olympics has made me more confident and has introduced me to many other athletes.
