Athlete Spotlight

Meet Drew Palumbo

Drew Palumbo

What team do you participate on?
For the past two years, I’ve participated on the Cranston Cyclones team. I have been a Special Olympics athlete for 27 years.

What sports do you compete in?
I compete in powerlifting, softball, golf, flag football, basketball, track, and snowshoeing. My favorites are snowshoeing and track because I love to run. When I run, all my problems go away – this makes me smile!

Where did you go to school?
I attended East Providence High School.

Do you have a job? If so, tell us about it.
I have worked at Stop & Shop on Greenwich Avenue in Warwick for 20 years. I bag groceries and frequently help customers bring their bags to their cars.

Why did you choose to participate in the Athlete Leadership University (ALU)?
I signed up mainly to become a better speaker. If I work on my speaking skills, I’ll be able to share my story one day.

What do you hope to accomplish in your involvement with this program?
My main goals are to get better about advocating for myself and others, and to learn how to calm my nerves so I can focus on being a strong public speaker.

What do you enjoy doing for fun?
I like to paint and do other artwork, hang out with my friends, go to the movies, and go out to eat. One of my favorite places to eat is Applebees. I also love to make my friends laugh. It’s pretty easy because I snort when I laugh!
