Americans recognize
Special Olympics as the country's most credible charity,
according to the results of a nationwide survey published in the
December 13, 1996 issue of The Chronicle fo Philanthropy.
The Chronicle survey, conducted by Ny Lavelle & Associates of
Dallas, Texas, noted that 73 percent of Americans rated Special
Olympics "very honest or extremely honest." The organization
outpaced its nearest competitor by 8 percentage points.
Special Olympics also placed high in other categories of the
Chronicle survey. It ranked 13th overall as "Best Liked", 9th
"most frequently donated to", and 10th most "strongly
supported".

Volunteers
Special Olympics Rhode Island's year-round program of
sports training and competition could not happen without
the support of the hundreds of volunteers who serve as
coaches and committee members. We also owe many thanks
to event volunteers who act as course marshals,
officials, timers, starters, lane judges, food servers,
security, and medical personnel.
If you've
helped us in the past, thank you! And if you are
considering volunteering at a Special Olympics event,
welcome! Volunteer orientations are offered for
first-time volunteers and training for specific duties
is provided. |

Year-Round
Opportunities |
|
The Special Olympics program in Rhode Island offers
year-round opportunities for training and competition;
there's always a need for volunteer support in many
different capacities. You can volunteer at the state
level or get involved with a program in your local
community. People of all ages are welcome to volunteer;
however, you must be at least age 16 to work directly
with an athlete. Not all duties involve interaction with
athletes or even attendance at an event, so there is
something for everyone.
Volunteers
are the core of Special Olympics Rhode Island (SORI)
programs and provide 98% of the "people power" needed to
provide year-round training and athletic competition for
athletes of all ages.
